Eye Exams
What is included in a comprehensive eye exam?
A comprehensive eye exam at District Vision Care goes well beyond checking your prescription. Dr. Mortensen evaluates:
Visual acuity and refraction · Intraocular pressure (glaucoma screening) · Retinal and optic nerve health · Color vision and depth perception · Binocular vision and eye alignment · Screening for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts
If you wear glasses or contacts, you'll leave with an updated prescription. We use modern diagnostic equipment to detect issues earlier and more accurately. Learn more about our eye exams →
How often should I get an eye exam?
For most healthy adults, we recommend a comprehensive eye exam once a year. Annual exams allow us to monitor changes in your vision, update your prescription, and catch early signs of eye disease before they become serious.
Patients with diabetes, glaucoma, a family history of eye disease, or other risk factors may benefit from more frequent visits. Dr. Mortensen will recommend a schedule tailored to your individual needs.
At what age should my child have their first eye exam?
The American Optometric Association recommends that children have their first eye exam by age 1, a follow-up around age 3, and then annually once they start school.
Early detection of vision problems like amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (eye misalignment) can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes. Dr. Mortensen is experienced with pediatric patients and uses child-friendly testing that doesn't require your child to read or respond to complex instructions. Learn about our pediatric eye care →
What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?
An optometrist (OD) is a licensed doctor of optometry who specializes in primary eye care, including eye exams, diagnosing and managing eye conditions, and prescribing glasses and contacts. Dr. Mortensen is an OD.
An ophthalmologist (MD) is a medical doctor who specializes in eye and vision care and is trained to perform eye surgery. For the vast majority of routine and specialty eye care needs, an optometrist is your primary provider. If surgery is ever needed, we'll coordinate a referral to a trusted ophthalmologist.
Can I get an eye exam without insurance?
Absolutely. We welcome self-pay patients and offer straightforward, transparent pricing. We accept cash, all major credit and debit cards, and HSA/FSA cards. For current exam pricing, please give us a call at (801) 495-4833. We'll give you an accurate estimate before your visit.
How long does an eye exam take?
A comprehensive eye exam typically takes between 45 minutes and one hour, though it may take a little longer if additional tests are needed or if you're being fitted for contacts for the first time. We recommend allowing a full hour, especially for your first visit.
What should I bring to my eye exam?
To make the most of your visit, please bring:
• Your current glasses and/or contact lenses (or their prescription if you have it)
• Your vision insurance card, if applicable
• A list of any medications you're currently taking (some can affect eye health)
• Any questions or concerns you'd like to discuss with Dr. Mortensen
If you're a new patient, plan to arrive a few minutes early to complete intake paperwork.
